01 — Local relevance

Why a fabricator based in Swindon works for Wiltshire.

Wiltshire is a big county with very different building patterns depending on where you are. North Wiltshire (Swindon, Cricklade, Wootton Bassett, Purton, Malmesbury edge) is denser and more modern. West Wiltshire (Chippenham, Melksham, Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon, Westbury) leans heavily on Cotswold stone terraces and Victorian mill housing. East Wiltshire (Marlborough, Pewsey, Devizes) is Downs villages, listed cottages and equestrian properties. South Wiltshire (Salisbury and the Plain) mixes Georgian townhouses, MOD-adjacent housing and rural farm buildings.

Each of those settings asks something different from a fabricator. Listed Cotswold cottages need conservation-sympathetic ironwork. Equestrian properties need heavy-gauge gates and stable-yard fencing that stand up to horses. Farm and rural sites need structural steel installed with limited access. We travel to all of them from Swindon.

Our Wiltshire coverage is not a marketing claim — it's how we book the week. If you're within roughly an hour of the SN5 workshop, you're a normal Wiltshire job. Beyond that we still work the county but plan travel and lift schedules more carefully so you're not paying for a wasted trip.

03 — Common Wiltshire problems

The steel work we're asked for most in Wiltshire.

Wiltshire property stock spans four centuries: listed Cotswold-stone cottages in the Downs villages, Georgian townhouses in Marlborough, Chippenham and Salisbury, Victorian mill terraces in Trowbridge and Bradford-on-Avon, mid-20th-century semis and 1970s estates across Chippenham and Melksham, and modern developments around Swindon, Devizes and Amesbury. Different eras need different steel: listed buildings need reversible, sympathetic ironwork; Georgian townhouses often need Juliet balconies and internal feature stairs; farm and equestrian yards need heavy fencing and field gates.

Structural steel for barn conversions

Wiltshire is full of agricultural and equestrian barns being converted to residential use. We supply and install the beam grids these conversions need, and fabricate replacement internal staircases where the original ladder or timber stair fails Building Regs.

Conservation-sympathetic gates and railings

Marlborough, Bradford-on-Avon, Corsham and Malmesbury sit in conservation areas where visible metalwork is scrutinised by planners. We work with your conservation officer or architect to design gates and railings that read as period-appropriate.

Field gates, stable yards and equestrian fencing

Vale of Pewsey, Salisbury Plain edge, and the villages around Marlborough have serious equestrian populations. We fabricate heavy-gauge field gates, stable-yard partitions and yard fencing sized for real horse loads, not garden-centre thickness.

Rust on exposed Downs and Plain properties

Elevated, wind-driven-rain sites across the Downs and Salisbury Plain destroy under-specified paint systems. We specify a proper primer and top-coat system, or stainless where the specification calls for it (balustrades), so the fabrication is still sound years down the line.

Climate & exposure
The Wiltshire Downs and Salisbury Plain are exposed sites. Prevailing south-westerlies, wet winters and hard frosts mean any external steel we fabricate for the county is either properly finished, primed and top-coated for the marine/rural specification, or stainless where the specification calls for it (balustrades). Cutting corners on the paint system here shows up inside two winters.
Access & infrastructure
Access across rural Wiltshire is the biggest planning factor. Narrow lanes into Downs villages, weight-limited bridges around the Kennet & Avon, restricted crane access to yards behind Cotswold cottages, and conservation-area or AONB constraints on visible fabrication all shape how a job runs. We survey for those constraints before quoting, not after.

Straight answers for Wiltshire customers.

Call the workshop — you'll get a fabricator, not a call centre.

Do you cover the whole of Wiltshire?+

Yes. From our Swindon workshop we work north Wiltshire (Chippenham, Malmesbury, Cricklade), west Wiltshire (Melksham, Trowbridge, Bradford-on-Avon, Westbury), east Wiltshire (Marlborough, Pewsey, Devizes) and south Wiltshire (Salisbury, Amesbury).

How quickly can you reach a Wiltshire site?+

Most Wiltshire site surveys are booked within 1–2 working days. Rural sites further from Swindon are scheduled around the survey van route so you're not billed for a wasted trip.

How much does steel fabrication cost in Wiltshire?+

Prices depend on the specification — a Juliet balcony in Chippenham and a full external fire escape in Salisbury are very different jobs. Every Wiltshire quote is written after a free site survey.

Do you work on listed and conservation-area properties?+

Yes, regularly. We work with your architect, planning consultant or conservation officer so the drawing that reaches planning is one they can approve.

Do you handle emergencies in Wiltshire?+

Where scheduling allows. Broken gates, sheared brackets, security repairs — call the workshop and we'll tell you honestly whether we can slot the job in.

Can you install as well as fabricate?+

Yes. All Wiltshire jobs are designed, welded and installed by our own CSCS-carded team.

What areas of Wiltshire do you work in most?+

Volume is strongest in north Wiltshire (Swindon, Chippenham, Malmesbury, Marlborough) simply because it's closest to the workshop, but we regularly work south to Salisbury and west to the Somerset border.

Are you fully insured?+

Yes. £2 million Public Liability insurance, work to BS EN 1090, CSCS-carded installers, written guarantee on fabrication and installation.
