01 — Overview

What steel handrails actually is — and when to commission it.

What it is

A steel handrail is a purpose-fabricated grab-rail for steps, ramps, accessible entrances and slopes. It's welded from tube or bar, fixed into the substrate with the correct anchors, and finished to survive its environment.

Who it's for

Homeowners in Swindon adding an accessible entrance or a rail to garden steps, landlords making rental properties safer, care providers meeting Doc M, and commercial clients on stepped or ramped access.

When it's needed

Any time steps or a ramp form part of an accessible route. Also whenever an existing rail is wobbly, corroded, at the wrong height or the wrong profile to grip properly.

Why professional help matters

A handrail is grabbed under panic conditions — a slip, a stumble, an ice patch. If it flexes, twists or breaks free of the wall, someone gets hurt. Getting the profile, height and fixings right is the whole job.

02 — What happens if you get it wrong

The four failures we see when steel handrails is done cheaply.

Ungrippable profile

A rail that's too fat, too flat, or too high isn't a handrail — it's a decoration. Doc M specifies the graspable diameter for a reason.

Loose or ripped-out fixings

Rails fixed with plasterboard plugs into masonry, or into weak brick without resin, wobble immediately and pull out under load.

Corroded steel outside

Unprimed or single-coat rails outdoors rust at the base and up the fixings within a couple of winters.

Handrail doesn't return

A handrail that stops in mid-air, without a wall-return or a downturn, catches on sleeves and pulls people off balance. Doc M specifies returns.

03 — Our process

From first call to signed-off installation.

  1. Step 1

    Free site survey

We measure the length, the incline, the head- and tail-returns and confirm the fixing substrate.

  2. Step 2

    Design & written quote

Rail profile, brackets, finish and returns specified in writing with the guarantee.

  3. Step 3

    Workshop fabrication

Rail cut, bent, welded and ground back. Brackets welded on. Full unit primed and finished.

  4. Step 4

    Installation

Fixed on site with the right anchors for the substrate — resin-anchored into masonry, through-bolted into structure, or fixed to a stanchion base plate on hard-standing.

  5. Step 5

    Sign-off & guarantee

We test each fixing under load, check the profile height, and hand over the written guarantee.

05 — In detail

Materials, methods, variations — the full picture.

This is the technical detail that separates a fabricator from a supplier. Read it, or skim the headings — either way, it's what you're paying for.

Compliance context — Doc K & Doc M

Approved Document K sets the requirement for guarding and handrails on stairs (heights, load, continuous grip). Approved Document M sets the accessibility requirements for entrances and ramps — graspable diameter (typically 40–45mm), mounting height, contrast and wall-return. A compliant handrail satisfies both where applicable.

Rail profiles

Round tube (Doc M-friendly, easy to grip), oval, D-section (fits close to a wall), moulded handrail (traditional). Round is the safe default for accessible routes.

Bracket & fixing options

Wall-mounted with resin-anchored bracket into masonry, stanchion-mounted on a base plate into concrete, through-bolted into steel structure, or floor-mounted on a hard-standing. Substrate selection matters more than most people think.

Finishes

The right finish depends on the environment — we specify the appropriate protective system for external residential and architectural rails, and a galvanised base where the rail will see hard weather for decades.

Applications

Front steps, garden steps, side alley steps, ramped accessible entrances, care-home internal corridors, workshop and plant-room steps, and rooftop access ladders. Regularly installed across residential and light-commercial properties in the ${CITY} area.

Call the workshop — you'll get a fabricator, not a call centre.

How much does a steel handrail cost?+

A simple two-metre external handrail typically starts in the low hundreds installed. Length, complexity, finish and bracket type change the price. Every quote is free and written.

How long does a steel handrail take to fit?+

Domestic handrails typically fabricate and install within 1–2 weeks from sign-off. Fit time on site is usually half a day.

Are your handrails Building Regs compliant?+

Yes — designed to comply with Approved Document K and, where applicable, Approved Document M.

Can you fit a handrail into old masonry?+

Yes — with correctly specified resin anchors. On very weak substrates we design a stanchion base instead.

How long does a steel handrail last outside?+

A correctly finished external rail lasts decades with only cosmetic maintenance.

Do you offer a guarantee on handrails?+

Yes — on fabrication and installation, in writing.

Can you match an existing handrail on the other side of the steps?+

Yes — we regularly fabricate a matching second rail to complete an existing setup.

Do you install handrails outside Swindon?+

Yes — across Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Berkshire, Gloucestershire and Bristol.
