What structural steel installation actually is — and when to commission it.
What it is
Structural steel installation is the delivery and fitting of fabricated structural steel — beams, columns, portal frames, connections — onto a live site, ready for a Building Control officer to sign off. It's a coordinated trade job that has to slot into the wider build programme.
Who it's for
Builders and main contractors on loft conversions, extensions, side-return infills, new-builds and light-industrial frames; and homeowners in Swindon project-managing their own renovation who need a supply-and-install package rather than parts.
When it's needed
When steel has to be installed as part of a live build — not just delivered to a yard and forgotten. Typical trigger points are demolition-day support, first-fix structural steel, and mezzanine or portal-frame erection.
Why professional help matters
Steel that turns up right but is fitted wrong is still a failure. Poor bearing onto padstones, unbolted connections, missing packers, and cold field welds cause Building Control fails, plaster cracks and structural risk. This is the technical detail that separates a fabricator from a supplier. Read it, or skim the headings — either way, it's what you're paying for.
Typical installation packages
Loft-conversion goalpost frames and ridge beams, single-storey rear extension opening-up beams and columns, double-storey extension structural steel, side-return infill steels, knock-through beams between reception rooms, garage-conversion lintels and support beams, new-build residential structural frames, and light-industrial portal frames.
Site methods
Manual handling with strong-backs and skates for domestic beams that will fit through the property, telehandler or hi-ab delivery where access allows, and mobile crane where beam size or site conditions require. Access and lifting method is decided at survey — not on install day.
Connections in situ
Bolted flange-plate and end-plate connections, welded flange connections, cleat and fin-plate bolted joints, and welded stiffeners where the engineer's detail calls for them. Site welding done by the same fabricator who welded the workshop connections.
Coordination with the wider trade package
Structural steel install is a coordinated job — bearings, padstones, pockets and openings all need to be right before the steel arrives. We survey the site, coordinate with the builder, and confirm padstone position and size before fabrication starts.

A single-beam supply-and-install (RSJ for a knock-through) typically starts in the low four-figures. Multi-beam and structural frame packages are priced beam-by-beam from the engineer's schedule. Every quote is free and written.
How long does a structural steel install take?+
A domestic single-beam install is typically one day on site. Multi-beam and frame packages run to several days. Fabrication lead time is 1–4 weeks depending on package size.
Do you install to my engineer's connection details?+
Yes. We fabricate and install to the engineer's calcs, drawings and connection details.
Do you supply-only if my builder prefers to install?+
Yes — supply-only is available where your builder wants to install themselves. Supply-and-install is what most trade clients ask for because it removes handover risk.
Are your installs Building Regs compliant?+
Yes. In line with BS EN 1090 and installed to Building Regs. Paperwork provided for Building Control.
