What steel gates actually is — and when to commission it.
What it is
A steel gate is a welded steel leaf — pedestrian or driveway, single or paired — hung on posts, brick pillars or a wall face, with hinges, drop-bolts, latches and stops set for the actual opening.
Who it's for
Homeowners in Swindon replacing old wooden or tired wrought-iron gates, developers finishing new driveways, farm and rural properties needing field-gate replacements, and commercial clients securing yards and premises.
When it's needed
When existing gates sag, drop, jam or rust; when a new driveway needs framing; when security has become a concern; or when the front of the property could carry more character than it currently does.
Why professional help matters
A gate is the first thing a visitor touches on your property. It also has to hang square through summer expansion and winter contraction, close reliably, latch cleanly, and — if automated — carry the extra load of a motor and safety edges. Bad gates aren't just ugly; they don't work.
The four failures we see when steel gates is done cheaply.
Sagging leaves
A gate that drops within a year is either badly welded, undersized or hung on the wrong posts. All three are avoidable.
Rusted-through hinges and bottoms
External steel that isn't primed or finished properly rots at the bottom rail and around the hinge welds. It's a five-year failure dressed up as a good deal.
Wrong style for the property
A cheap flat-bar gate on a Georgian frontage kills kerb appeal. A bespoke traditional wrought-iron style is a different property.
Gates that don't fit the actual opening
Off-the-shelf gates rarely match real openings — walls aren't square, drives aren't level. That's what bespoke fabrication solves.

What you actually get when you commission this from SRN.
Hung square, first time
Measured on site, not off a stock chart.
Traditional or modern style
Wrought-iron style with scrolls, cast collars and moulded top rails — or clean flat-bar architectural. We build both to the same standard.
Weather-hardened finish
Correctly primed and topcoated so the finish outlasts the trend.
Serious hardware
Heavy-duty hinges, cast drop-bolts and cleanly welded latches — not off-the-shelf lightweight kit.
Automation-ready if required
Designed to accommodate underground or ram automation and safety edges from day one.
5-star Google reviews on gates
Multiple public reviews specifically praise our gate design, workmanship and installation.
Materials, methods, variations — the full picture.
This is the technical detail that separates a fabricator from a supplier. Read it, or skim the headings — either way, it's what you're paying for.
Gate types
Single pedestrian gates, single driveway gates, paired swing driveway gates (the most common domestic set), sliding cantilever gates for tight approaches, and matching side gates. All fabricated to hang square on their actual opening.
Styles we fabricate
Traditional wrought-iron style with scrollwork, cast collars, spear tops and moulded top rails for period and stone properties; classic Georgian plain vertical-bar gates with a moulded top rail; modern architectural with clean flat bar, laser-cut panels or slatted infill; industrial with visible welds and a raw-steel or matt black finish; and matching-to-existing where the property already has gates or railings we can design to.
Posts, pillars & fixings
Steel posts concreted in for standard driveways, hinges welded and painted after alignment; hinges resin-bolted into existing brick or stone pillars; wall-mounted hinges for tight openings. Substrate and hinge selection is set at survey — not on install day.
Ironmongery
Cast, hooded or ball-headed hinges to match style; drop-bolts and shoot-bolts for paired gates; Suffolk latches, ring latches and mortice locks for pedestrian gates; and automation-compatible hinges where the gate is being wired for motors.
Finishes
The right finish depends on exposure and aesthetic — we specify the appropriate protective system for the environment. Matt black is the current dominant colour on modern architectural gates; traditional properties often go bronze-black or gloss black with picked-out gold detailing.
Straight answers to the questions we're asked most.
How much do bespoke steel gates cost?+
A paired driveway set typically starts in the low thousands installed, with wrought-iron style and premium finishes costing more. Every quote is free and written after a site survey.
How long does it take from quote to installed gates?+
Typically 4–6 weeks from sign-off, depending on design and finish.
Can you match my existing railings or period property style?+
Yes — we regularly fabricate in traditional wrought-iron style to match a period frontage, including scrolls, collars and moulded top rails.
Can the gates be automated later?+
Yes — we can design the gate structure to accept automation from day one, even if you're not installing the motors yet.
How long will steel gates last?+
A correctly specified and finished set of steel gates lasts decades with only light periodic maintenance of the topcoat.
Do you offer a guarantee on gates?+
Yes — on fabrication and installation, in writing.
Do you install the posts and pillars, or just the gates?+
Both. We can set steel posts, hang from your existing brick pillars, or work with your builder on new pillars.
Do you install steel gates in Swindon and surrounding areas?+
Yes — Swindon is home. Regularly installed across Wiltshire, Oxfordshire, Somerset, Berkshire, Gloucestershire and Bristol.
